The anticipation is palpable. The stores are jam-packed with all of those procrastinators. You’ve begun to thaw Christmas dinner. The big day is almost here! Are you ready? There’s so much to do and so little time but we don’t want to forget the Jolly Old Elf himself. Here are some fun last minute ideas for you and your kids to welcome Santa after his long trip from the North Pole.
- Write a welcome letter to Santa or make a welcome banner (don’t forget to make sure that “Santa” writes a thank you note to the kids in return for Christmas morning).
- Leave Santa a plate of his favorite cookies and some milk or, if you’re extra conscientious, leave his cookies in a treat-bag-to-go.
- Don’t have a fireplace? Don’t forget to leave a key under the mat outside the front door (it doesn’t have to be the actual front door key, the kids won’t know the difference).
- The reindeer need some food, too! Leave them a plate of carrots and celery or sprinkle reindeer food on the lawn (see recipe below).
Reindeer Food
In a small zipper food storage bag or empty shaker container, mix:
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals* (as used for cake and cookie decorating)
If giving as a gift or favor (makes great day-before-Christmas-vacation gifts for your child’s classmates), attach a gift tag with the following instructions:
Be sure to take this magic food and sprinkle on the lawn,
On Christmas, Santa’s reindeer travel miles before the dawn.
The smell of oats and shining path will guide them on their way,
And you’ll wake up to Santa’s gifts next morn on Christmas Day.
Printable tags can be found at Organized Home.
*Please DO NOT use glitter in your reindeer food. It is dangerous for small animals and birds to ingest.

After the food...
We made some nice poop from tootsie rolls and left it out where the kids put the reindeer food. Everyone enjoyed that from my little boys all the way up to Grandpa.
