When was the last time you talked to your kids about safety? Have you gone over the rules regarding strangers, bus safety, crossing the street, bullying etc.? If it has been a while or maybe you haven't even done it yet, now is a good time to have this conversation.
Regardless of the age of your child, it is important to review the rules every once and a while. Make sure your children know what to do when it comes to strangers. I have always told my kids that if Mommy is close enough to touch then its ok to talk to a stranger and be polite. If mommy is not that close then we follow the stranger rules.
What about bus safety? Do your kids remember to stay seated in the bus? Keep their body inside the windows? Do they know what to do or who to go with if you are not there when they get off the bus? Make sure to discuss these things and have a plan. Do you see them looking both ways when they cross the street? It is exciting when that bus pulls up and even more when school is out. Be sure they are practicing safety in the street.
Do they know how to keep their body safe from both bullies or someone who may try to hurt them? Are they comfortable talking to you about these things if someone is bothering them?
Have you discussed a plan with your kids if they get lost at a store or when you are out in public? I tell my kids to find another mom with kids or an employee of the store (it's good to point employees out to them when you are out).
If you are not sure what to say you can check out these resources on safety . You can also get lots of great safety products for your home and travel at My Precious Kid. Make sure to talk to your kids about these safety issues at the beginning of every school year. Lets encourage our kids to be safe at school and at play.
We would love to hear from those who are more experienced moms. Share with us some ways you have talked to your kids about safety. We would love your input.

thanks!
thanks for the suggestion Kim, we will add it to our resources.
