WEEDS!!- THE BATTLE CONTINUES

weeds

We're heading into fall and I know that now is not the time  gardeners wants to hear this, but it must be said.  "DON'T STOP WEEDING!"

It's so frustrating to go out  into your  garden,  take a close look and see the weeds growing better than the petunias.  I've lost more newly planted shrubs this summer because of the lack of rain  (that is until August became the wettest month this year in our area).  And yet, despite less than ideal growing conditions,  my large assortment of weeds keep thriving.

Remember, if you can help it, don't let the weeds start to flower.  Annual weeds live only one season, but their flowers are producing seeds that can't wait to fall to the ground and germinate as soon as conditions are right.

Perennial weeds are harder to control once they are established in your garden. They will produce seed, but also grow by creeping  stolons and rhizomes.  When pulling out weeds, try to get as much of the root as possible.

Every  weed pulled out of the garden now will help your garden next year.  Even after a frost, I try to remove as many of the weeds and their roots as possible.

I wish I could learn to accept these little warriors that have it out for my back and fingernails….but even after 25 years of gardening, they still haven't gotten the best of me yet.
